Gauge

Terms of Use

Last updated 8 October 2026

In short. Gauge helps you notice what has changed and bring real data to a doctor. It is not medical advice. Your check-ins live on your phone, not with us. If you buy Plus, Apple or Google handle the payment and you cancel through them.

1. Who we are and what this covers

Gauge is made by Paul Huemer, Aubergstraße 72, 4040 Linz, Austria (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at gaugeapp.contact@gmail.com.

These terms cover your use of the Gauge mobile app (listed in app stores as “Gauge - Men's Symptom Tracker”) and this page. By using Gauge you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

Gauge is for adults. You must be at least 18 to use it.

2. Gauge is not medical advice

Gauge is a symptom-awareness tool, not a medical device. It does not provide medical advice or a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for seeing a doctor. What Gauge shows you is based only on what you enter, compared with your own earlier answers. Patterns it points out are observations, not causes.

If you are worried about your health, talk to a doctor. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

3. Your data

Your check-ins, baseline and notes are yours. They are stored on your phone, and we never receive them. How that works, including the optional phone backup, is explained in the Privacy Policy.

Because we hold no copy of your data, we cannot recover it for you. Phone backup (on by default) and “Export your data” in Settings are the ways to keep a copy. Phone backup depends on your phone's own backup being switched on and working, which we cannot see or control.

4. Your licence to use Gauge

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Gauge on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, in line with these terms and the rules of the app store you got it from.

You may not, except where the law allows it: copy, modify or redistribute the app; decompile or reverse engineer it; get around its security features; use it to build a competing product; or use it in any unlawful way.

Apple and Google

These terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google. We, not Apple or Google, are responsible for the app and its support. If the app fails to meet an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple or Google, who may refund the purchase price under their policies; beyond that, they have no warranty obligation for the app. Apple and Google are not responsible for any claims relating to the app, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, consumer protection, or intellectual property claims. Apple, Google and their subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm you are not in a country subject to a US government embargo or on a US government list of restricted parties.

5. Plus and payments

Gauge is free to use. Some extra features may be offered as a paid subscription called Plus. Plus is not on sale yet; until it is, the app may ask whether you would be interested. Your answer stays on your phone, and nothing is charged.

When Plus is available:

6. Ideas and feedback

Gauge and its content (the software, design, text and logo) belong to us or our licensors. If you send us suggestions or feedback, we may use them to improve Gauge without owing you anything.

7. Changes to Gauge and to these terms

We may change, update or stop parts of Gauge. We may also update these terms. When we do, we change the date at the top, and for important changes we tell you in the app. If you keep using Gauge after a change, the new terms apply. If you do not agree, you can stop using the app and cancel any subscription.

8. Disclaimer

To the extent the law allows, Gauge is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not promise that Gauge will be error-free or always available, or that what it shows is complete or accurate.

9. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Gauge, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the six months before the claim arose.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for intent or gross negligence, for death or personal injury, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

10. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by Austrian law, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer living in the EU, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country, and you can bring a claim in Austria or in the EU country where you live. Please contact us first; most issues can be sorted out by email.

11. General

These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between you and us about Gauge. If any part turns out to be invalid, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to someone else.

Privacy Policy

Last updated 8 October 2026

In short. Everything you record in Gauge stays on your phone and is never sent to us. There is no account.

Phone backup, which is on by default, keeps one copy in your own Google account (or iCloud on iPhone), encrypted so only you can read it. Not us, not Google, not Apple. You can turn it off in Settings.

The only things we receive are the emails you send us and, once Plus is on sale, whether you have bought it.

1. Who is responsible

Paul Huemer, Aubergstraße 72, 4040 Linz, Austria, gaugeapp.contact@gmail.com, is responsible for the processing described in this policy.

2. What stays on your phone

Gauge stores everything you enter only on your phone:

This is sensitive health information. We never receive it, see it or process it. All of Gauge's analysis, including your doctor summary, is worked out on your phone.

Your check-ins are kept in an encrypted database on your phone. With phone backup on, Gauge also keeps a backup copy in its private storage on your phone; that copy is protected by your phone's own storage encryption rather than Gauge's.

App lock. If you turn on app lock, your phone checks your fingerprint, face or screen lock. Gauge only learns whether the check succeeded. It never receives or stores any biometric data.

Reminders. The daily reminder is scheduled on your phone. Nothing is sent to a server to deliver it.

Errors. If Gauge runs into a problem, a technical note about it is kept on your phone only. It is not sent to us.

3. Phone backup

Phone backup is there so your history is not lost when you change phones or reinstall Gauge. It is on by default. You can turn it off at any time in Settings, which deletes Gauge's backup copies.

On Android

Gauge's backup copy is included in your phone's Google backup, but only when Google can encrypt that backup end to end with your phone's screen lock. That means Google stores it but cannot read it. If your phone has no screen lock, Android leaves Gauge out of the backup. On Android 8 and older, where this encryption is not available, phone backup is not offered. On Android 12 and newer, the backup copy also moves when you transfer directly to a new phone. The backup is kept in your Google account under Google's terms; after you turn phone backup off or delete your data, it is replaced at your phone's next backup.

On iPhone

Gauge encrypts the backup copy on your phone before it goes to iCloud, with a key kept in your iCloud Keychain, which is itself end-to-end encrypted. Apple stores it but cannot read it. Your regular iCloud device backup, which Apple can read, contains only Gauge's encrypted database, whose key never leaves your phone. The copy is kept in your iCloud account under Apple's terms.

In both cases the backup lives in your own account, not ours. We have no access to it and no way to read it.

4. What you share yourself

When you use “Export your data” or export a summary for your doctor, Gauge creates the file on your phone and opens your phone's share options. Where the file goes, such as email, a cloud drive or a printer, is your choice, and that service's own privacy terms apply. We do not receive a copy.

5. What we receive

Interest in Plus

Plus is not on sale yet. If you tap “I'm interested”, the app remembers that on your phone only. Nothing is sent to us.

Gauge 1.0.7 and earlier sent a short anonymous note when the Plus screen was first opened and when someone tapped “I'm interested”. It contained no health data, no name, no account and no device identifier. Gauge stopped sending it in version 1.0.8, and we have deleted the notes we received.

Buying Plus (once it is on sale)

If you buy Plus, Apple or Google process the payment. We never see your name or payment details. To confirm that your subscription is active, the app uses RevenueCat, a subscription service, which receives a random identifier created by the app, your purchase and subscription status, and technical details such as your device type and store country. None of your check-ins, notes or other health information is ever sent to Apple, Google or RevenueCat.

When you contact us

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use it only to reply.

6. What we do not do

7. Legal bases (EU and UK)

We do not process your health information at all, so no legal basis for it is needed on our side. It is processed only on your phone, by the app, for you.

8. Service providers and transfers

ProviderWhat forWhat they receive
Apple, Google (app stores)Selling Plus, once availablePayment and purchase details, under their own privacy policies
RevenueCatConfirming Plus subscriptions, once availableA random app identifier, purchase status, device type and store country

Some of these providers process data outside the EU, for example in the United States. Where they do, they rely on the safeguards the GDPR requires, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

If Gauge is ever sold or transferred to someone else, the limited information we hold would go with it, and this policy would continue to apply to it.

9. How long we keep things

10. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or port your personal information, and to object to its processing. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

Most of this is in your hands already: your data is on your phone, you can export it, and you can delete all of it in Settings. For anything else, email gaugeapp.contact@gmail.com. We will reply within one month.

You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority. In Austria that is the Österreichische Datenschutzbehörde, Barichgasse 40-42, 1030 Wien, www.dsb.gv.at. In other EU countries you can contact your local authority; in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk); in Switzerland, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.

11. Children

Gauge is for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly receive information from anyone younger. If you think a child has contacted us, email us and we will delete what we hold.

12. Security

Your check-ins are kept in an encrypted database on your phone, with the key held in your phone's secure key storage. You can add an app lock. Backups leave your phone only end-to-end encrypted. No method is perfect, and the security of your data also depends on your phone: keep its screen lock on and its software up to date.

13. United States residents

Some US states give you rights to know about, access, correct and delete your personal information, and to opt out of its sale, sharing for targeted advertising, or profiling. We do not sell or share personal information, do not use it for targeted advertising or profiling, and never receive your health information. To use any of these rights, email us; if we decline, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and then contact your state attorney general. In the last 12 months:

CategoryReceived by us
IdentifiersOnly a random app identifier via RevenueCat if you buy Plus (not yet on sale), and your email address if you email us
Commercial informationOnly your Plus purchase status, once Plus is on sale
Sensitive personal information, including health and biometric dataNo
Location, browsing or network activity, inferences, and all other categoriesNo

We do not currently respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals, as there is no agreed standard for them. Gauge does no cross-site tracking.

14. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we update the date at the top. For important changes, we tell you in the app before they take effect.
